What is that round goose egg?

Puzzle: The first thing I think about is to find a puzzle for my kids to make them learn something from it. My choice most of the time was a Math puzzle that can be found on the internet or in a book. Many dont know what is "0", that round goose egg originated from or who invented the numbers or is this Hindu, Arabic ,Roman .....
In 1983 in Saudi Arabia I was among a small team trying to configure an IBM Machine, in the manual there was a note saying: "Please use Arabic numerals only". They were surprised, "We dont have an Arabic keyboard here, this is nuts!". I told them "0,1,2,3,... are the Arabic numerals". How do I know? well, when I was in college I was taking a Mathematics course about "Number Theory" which tells us so much about numbers and their origin and much more complicated stuff. You can educate your kids about numbers by using Math puzzles, they dont have to wait until they finish college to learn something that can be taught to them now. |
